Battery Powered Air fed Respirators & Masks

Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR) are the recommended dust masks for beards as well as those requiring a higher level of protection & comfort.

Battery powered respirators will either have a waist mounted power unit such as the JSP, 3M Versaflo & Sundstrom powered respirators or incorporated within the head unit such as the kite Airhood which allows full movement with no additional breathing tubes.

Battery Powered Respirators

The fan unit draws air through the filter to provide clean air to the user. Recommended for flexibility of movement for products that good warning properties (Can be smelt or tasted)

Supplied Air Respirator

A gentle clean air supply is supplied to the user via a breathing tube connected to a compressor. Recommended for products with poor warning properties (cannot be smelt or tasted)

01: Are there Different Battery Powered Masks?

Battery powered respirators will either have a waste mounted power unit with a breathing tube attachment from the waist to the head unit or will have everything incorporated into the head top with no additional breathing tubes. The Kite Airhood is an all in one power unit.

Battery powered respirators classified as either a TH1, TH2 & TH3 protective categories. TH1 provides an APF protection factor of 10 (APF 10) & TH2 provide an APF protection factor of 20 (APF 20)

02: What are the Safety Standards for Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR)

All powered air respirators in the UK must be EN146 & EN12941 EU Safety Standard & are classified into three protective categories, TH1, TH2 & TH3.

03: What is the Difference between a Battery Powered Respirator & Air Supplied Respirators?

Air supplied respirators provide a higher level of protection against hazards compared to battery powered respirators as well as providing protection against products with poor warning properties ie cannot be tasted or smelt.

Battery powered respirators provide clean air which is drawn through a filter by a fan unit whilst an air supplied respirator is supplied by air through a regulator attached to an air compressor. Battery powered respirators provide a higher level of flexibility of movement compared to the restrictions afforded by attachment to a compressor.

04: What Mask should be used to protect against 2 Pack Paint / 2 Pack Isocyanate Paint?

The spraying of 2 Pack Isocyanate paint as reported by the HSE to the main cause of occupational asthma in the UK and therefore the correct protective mask should be selected. Air supplied masks such as the SR 200 Airline, & the 3M 306 head top & Air line Regulator provide the correct protection for industrial spraying.

05: What is an Air Supplied Respirator?

Air supplied respirators incorporates a cover to the face such as head helmet or head hood top classified to the European standard EN270 & EN1835 which is supplied via an adjustable flow valve with breathable air from an air compressor unit. The flow valve must warn on low air supply and all breathing tubes be to European Safety standard EN1835 covering light duty breathing tubes LDH1, LDH2 & LDH3 as well as heavy duty hoses HD3.

The maximum length of any air line (Regulator Valve) to the compressor air source is 30 metres EN270 & 10 metres EN1835.

06: What Mask can be used with a beard?

Powered air masks are the only recommended mask to provide adequate dust mask protection for beards. Th head tops can either be hooded or hard helmet such as the 3m M306 & TR 315 power unit,

07: Do Powered Air Mask Respirators need to be Face Fitted?

Only disposable masks, half masks & full face masks are required to be face fitted. Powered air respirators do not require face fitting.
